A family holiday taking all three Rhuthollian properties during some excellent Spring weather. The setting was very peaceful and relaxing and it was great fun to visit Ty Capel and Ty Uchaf for drinks.
Ty Capel is quite grand compared to the other two houses and is not what you might expect to find in this location, an interesting contrast with its surroundings. The fire is good but heaving the coal up was a bit of a chore (go for 10 kg rather than the 25 kg bags we bought - elementary mistake). Start cooking and the small kitchen rapidly becomes a sauna. The staircase is steep, awkward for anyone above 5’2” and the polished wood slippery - at the end of the week I had the bruises to back-up what we had read from previous log book comments.
If you’ve come here to walk, the path to Ty Capel will not bother you at all. There are plenty of tracks and footpaths to explore in the forest on the doorstep and an excellent viewpoint at the nearby reservoir. It’s an easy 30 minute walk down into Betws-y-coed and you can always get a taxi if you don’t fancy the hike back up the hill. Further afield the attractions of Snowdonia are within easy reach.
Betws is fine for a drink and a potter but for substantial supplies the town of Llanrwst has everything.
The Tys are well enough separated that you have privacy if you want it but close enough to pop between for a coffee, ideal for a group of friends or family as an alternative to a large property. You could easily “hole-up” for the week with a couple of dogs and a couple of cases of wine.
