Just had to take advantage of the 50% discount this year. Yes it drips – a lot – but you get used to it. Anyway, the week we were there it was so scorching hot that we spent most of our time on the roof. This is a tremendously attractive feature of the tower, with plenty of room, privacy and good views all around.
Inside the acoustics are incredible – don’t slag off anyone in the party, you never know who will be able to hear what you say. There’s much fun to be had from the unusual acoustics ...and the hammock... with both having an element of danger about them.
Aldburgh has a justifiably good reputation for eating out and our favourite was ‘Café 152’. It is probably safest to book at all the restaurants, but if it’s excellent fish & chips you want you’ll need a tent and sleeping bag to beat the queues, or a better idea is to go to the pub for a few swift ones then stroll in just before the shop closes. They were good, and that from a Yorkshireman is high praise! Pity I can’t say the same about the Adnams which was awful with the exception of the pub next to the brewery in Southwold.
Apart from the beer, Southwold is well worth a visit to see just how a traditional seaside town used to be. We hired bikes (Walberswick Cycle Hire) and cycled there, much better than a stinky car in such hot weather.
Not enough room to mention all the places we visited but they were the ones you might expect. Mostly good but the Oysteridge at Orford Ness was a bit of a disappointment to be honest.
Be prepared to repel scum as they attempt to enter the tower!
