If you want somewhere to retreat for a quiet birthday weekend, this has got to be the place. The building on the very edge of the village is set in splendid isolation from the surroundings in its massive moated grounds.
Although well apart from the village, it’s only a few minutes walk to the top of the square, where there’s a general store, a pub (unfortunately not experienced), one or two other small shops and not much more. The famous coaching inn was closed and boarded up at our visit.
Inside the building is quite snug. For four people it might be a bit of a squeeze in the living room and around the table but the bedrooms are a decent size as is the bathroom. We needed the fire at night and some of the house is a little draughty but bedrooms and bathroom were very warm.
This was a relatively new part of the country for us and I have to say the land around is not very inspiring, we weren’t enthused by the rather tame looking footpaths through ploughed fields. A trip to Stamford, however, revealed a beautiful old town with plenty to entertain and amuse... strongly recommended.
Personally, I wouldn’t rush back here but I could imagine at a different time of year and with good weather it might make a nice base from which to visit the surrounding area.
