If Dolbelydr is anything to go by, there’s a definite advance in the standard to which Landmarks are being restored, particularly with regard to facilities.  From the outside it looks like a fairly normal farmhouse, quite big and rustic.  Inside there’s a more than a touch of the contemporary about the place; a lot of restoration means a lot of new joinery, the kitchen area would not be out of place in a smart apartment, underfloor heating and an island bath add to the modern feel. There’s still plenty of old stuff, massive beams and hefty ironwork but I’m not sure if the two styles live in harmony. It is a nice place though, well off the beaten track and very quiet.

The weekend we spent there felt very short, mainly because of seriously overdoing it on Saturday night but it’s that sort of house - ideal for a post Christmas get together.  Shut the door, get the fires blazing, keep the corkscrew moving and let nature take it’s course.

The grates in the fire are very big, better suited to logs than coal but logs were devoured and coal proved more enduring.  Fires were, of course, unnecessary as even in January the house was warm but as every Landmarker knows, that’s not the point.

A day trip to Ruthin yielded a few interesting shops and a visit to the old jail that was pretty good really.

The restored barn next door houses a top quality table tennis table and rack of awards and acknowledgments for the restoration which are surely deserved.

The log book contains a real VIP entry, not just a Hugh Scully or Damon Hill.
