We made a flying visit here while family were staying the weekend. Easy to find, even in the dark and discovered it to be nicely isolated upon sunrise the following day.

The range in the living room was unusual but quite effective both visually and as a source of heat. The bathroom was like a Finnish sauna and the kitchen comfortable, but the most interesting feature has to be the heather roof in the twin room. It has a distinctive earthy smell and despite the initially chilly atmosphere of a cold December night, once in bed it was warm and cosy – and we strongly disagree with some of the very negative comments in the Log Book...  if you have ever spent time camping, this is like the Ritz!

For lovers of Roman history this is the place to be.  You can’t go ten yards without coming across yet another brown sign pointing to a place of interest and with Vindolanda just down the track it’s virtually in your back yard.

A return visit in Spring and great weather.  Managed to make use of the large garden in T-shirt order.

An excellent circular  walk incorporating Housteads Fort and the most famous section of the Wall, (cf “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”) returning via the inn at Twice Brewed with the aid of several pints of very good beer.

Haltwhistle supplies everything... very well !
