Our second visit to Calverley on a hot May weekend. Spent a lot of time in the back garden in deck chairs, drinking long cold refreshers, with occasional trips to the pub to stretch the legs.
The house is very nice and is part of a much bigger old manor farm-type complex which is now a bit of a mish-mash of buildings; some inhabited, some not, some pretty much derelict. The whole lot could do with unifying and the site could be made into a great, big Landmark, with a big garden. As it is, and despite having plenty of character, I think it lacks charm. Calverley Old Hall is only minutes away from pleasant open countryside but the actual setting of the house is very drab.
The rooms are perfectly adequate, typically furnished with a range of good pieces but somehow it’s not comfortable. All the bedrooms are fine, and the main one is quite grand. It was clean, well equipped and well kept. There’s something missing though for me, others may disagree, and I know from talking with the housekeeper it is well used and gets it’s fair share of repeat bookings.
Landmark have a sleeping giant with Calverley, I hope someday, someone can find the key to unlock it’s potential.
