A spring break with friends at a long anticipated Landmark did not disappoint. First impressions of the building were of a rather bigger, rather brighter and rather warmer than expected property. Although parking is supposed to be restricted to two cars, we had no problems over a weekend with four.

Inside the layout is a sociable one, all in one big open plan room; in the sunny weather of our visit the light streamed through the open windows and we ate big salads and drank cold beer. I’d say this room would be just as welcoming on a chilly winter’s night, with a blazing stove, a few bottles of claret and a fat rib of beef.

The gatehouse is in a very quiet spot, off the busy main road into Ludlow, on the edge of the large estate of a grand (private) house. There’s direct access to paths and tracks straight from the door, including a very easy and pleasant walk into Ludlow itself; avoiding the need to further choke up the town with even more traffic.  If overloaded in the stomach department for the journey back, you can always catch the bus home.

The staircase is steep and narrow but with a judiciously placed bench across the top of the stairwell the junior member survived the trip in one piece, unlike one of the senior members, for whom Bromfield has left indelible memory - beware the odd bit of low woodwork!

You’ll get anything you need in Ludlow, where there are numerous eating houses, cafes and pubs.  We failed to find a decent drinking pub which was a bit of a disappointment, although the search was not exactly exhaustive.  The Thai restaurant, which  looks like a pub, served a fantastic lunch. Closer to home there’s food available at the nearby Clive Arms and the brand new food hall attached to it.
