This was a Summer holiday with friends and a most enjoyable time it was. Perhaps I should have read the details more carefully but I was rather taken aback to find the property in the middle (or at least at the edge) of a cemetery. Not that it was of any real consequence except for the night we arrived back at the impressive arched gates to find a bus-load of screaming teenagers on some kind of cryptic experience.
There’s definitely a slightly sinister feel to the whole set-up, enhanced during our stay by some foggy nights and not entirely absent within the tower due to the presence of some quite funereal fixtures. On our first night we were invited to join a tour of the tower and museum by the curator, who later joined us for a glass in our apartment, being mercilessly pumped for information about Bath.
Much of her advice was acted upon and several good lunches, museums and galleries later I can confirm that she knew what she was talking about. The days fell into a regular pattern - walk into town, pottering between attractions, lunch till three, a little more pottering and then set off back around tea-time, breaking the journey several times at wayside hostelries. To eat I would recommend “Salt & Pepper” and to drink I suggest you get hold of a leaflet for an ale-trail which includes some very convivial drinking houses.
The Museum of Bath at Work was particularly good but avoid the Roman Baths at all costs!
