This is certainly one of the most eye-catching properties in the handbook and along with the pineapple is for me one of the organisation’s iconic buildings. It fulfills it’s role well, being slightly awkward to live in, nicely furnished and full of surprises.
At the time we visited the open fire was a bit of a health hazard but I’m told that a new stove has been installed and all is well. No more will guests return home reeking like a kipper.
The living room is small and was a squeeze when two friends came for Sunday lunch but the rest of the place is of a good size. The circular layout and door positions make navigation something of a learning curve but by the end of the weekend I had a 90% success rate in getting to the room I intended.
There is good walking to be had straight from the door; Beamsley Beacon and Fountains Abbey, and plenty more within a short, pleasant drive. Skipton is one of my favourite towns having spent many nights sampling it’s ample hospitality; Timothy Taylor’s at the Woolly Sheep (£1-a-pint on Thursday), the Bangladeshi balti restaurant and Le Caveau bistro, Bizzie Lizzie’s fish & chips... ah, fond memories!
Big Morrisons in Skipton but lots of other good shops too and a big market three times a week.
