“Time spent on intelligence is rarely wasted”

The words of Winston Churchill and a mantra of the discerning Landmarker.

We first discovered the Landmark Trust while staying with a friend.  The handbook was on a coffee table in his lounge and I began to flick through the pages. It was hard to take in at first, the fact that you could actually stay in these buildings that looked like the sort of places you would normally have to shell out £5 just to look around. The seed was sown.
Soon after this we ordered the handbook, got together with some of the family and plotted our first Landmark holiday. Not quite sure about things, we plumped for somewhere fairly accessible but that would be quite different from anywhere we has stayed before. I have to say our choice was inspired!  From our first sight of the property, which seems to appear out of nowhere to loom massive against the skyline, it was clear we were in for something out of the ordinary, and so it proved.  This property defined “wow factor”. Our weekend passed in a sense of amazement and we realised that this could be the start of something big.  We’ve been back a couple of times now, each time with different friends and each time it was their first Landmark - I can think of no better place start your own obsession.
This site contains a brief resume of our thoughts about the Landmark Trust properties we have stayed in and our experiences during our gradual trawl and crawl through the catalogue of the Landmark Trust. For each of the places we have stayed there’s a short entry along with some additional photography, presented to augment that of the handbook - but not to reveal too much - after all, one of the main pleasures of the stay is the initial exploration of the building.  No doubt some of the Landmark Trust’s properties have a bigger wow factor than others but every one is different and every one has its own special feeling.
We’ve had the chance to stay in a whole range of properties, big, small, in town, in the middle of nowhere, and found charms at every place. We’ve also had quibbles and grumbles (but not too many) and in this website we’ve added a few notes that might be useful for helping get by.
